A recent report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) reveals that 1.3 million people have lost their jobs during the recession in the UK, more than double the official figure quoted by the Office for National Statistics.

The difference in figures are due to the official figures not taking into account the 700,000 people that went through the ordeal of losing their job but later found work elsewhere – forced to take large pay cuts or reduced working hours.

CIPD’s chief economic adviser John Philpott said that “Although the scale of job loss in the recession is much less than originally feared and much less than might have been expected given the scale of the contraction in the economy, it is evident that the direct experience of redundancy, repeat spells of unemployment and pay penalties has nonetheless been widespread”.

Philpott also pointed out how “redundancy also affects the families, friends and former colleagues of those made redundant.”

5 billion pounds have been invested during the recession to help people find jobs. Employment spokesman Jim Knight said: “We will continue to invest in jobs, skills and training to support everyone looking for work.”
