The Czech Republic’s centre-right minority government has lost a vote of no-confidence midway through the country’s six-month EU presidency.
Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek’s government narrowly lost a vote of no-confidence on Tuesday night. The collapse comes just four days after the Hungarian leader, Ferenc Gyuarcsany, resigned and and five weeks after the Latvian government’s collapse.
It was a huge embarrassment for Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, coming just days before a planned visit by President Barack Obama and midway through the Czech Republic’s six-month European Union presidency. Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said the opposition has needlessly caused a political upheaval bringing the country to chaos.
Both the political and economical situation in several eastern european countries is beginning to raise stark concerns over social unrest.
