British Airways has asked 30,000 of its employees if they would work without getting paid for up to a month in order to help the airline survive the global economic meltdown. The struggling airline is battling the economic crisis in new “creative ways” as it recently reported an annual operating loss of $362 million.
The airline’s chief Willie Walsh announced he will not receive a salary for the month of July and is urging employees to follow his lead, reports AP. Mr. Walsh receives an estimated 1 million dollars per year.
“I am looking for every single part of the company to take part in some way in this cash-effective way of helping the company’s survival plan. It really counts,” Walsh said in a company publication, AP reports.
The measure is by all means unique, something another statement from Mr. Walsh clearly portrays saying there were “absolutely no signs of recovery” in the industry.
Unions responses have been somewhat “annoyed“. The union said its members had agreed “to share the pain provided they also shared in the gain”.
