Early Thursday the French train network, airports, utilities and the public sector were hit by work stoppages, the second major cordinated strike in France this year.
Over 200 rallies will be held throughout the day all across France with over 1 million people expected to participate. The strikes are in response French President, Nicolas Sarkozy’s handling of the current economic crisis, resulting in a surge in unemployment and rising injustice.
Unions are demanding that Sarkozy hike the minimum wage, increase taxes on the rich and scrap plans to cut public sector jobs.
President Nicolas Sarkozy told cabinet ministers Wednesday that he “understands the concerns of the French people,” but that his government has ruled out new social spending, saying its top priority remains to protect jobs and industry, according to the French news agency, Agence France-Presse.
