Libyan ambassador, Ali Aujali clarified remarks by leader Moammar Gadhafi, who called for a holy war against Switzerland last month, saying it is a call for [an] “economic and commercial boycott against Switzerland.”
The Libyan leader called for a jihad against Switzerland after the Swiss voted to ban the building of new mosque minarets.
The diplomatic dispute which initially began in 2008 after the brief arrest in Geneva of Gadhafi’s son Hannibal when two hotel employees complained he had mistreated them, has since escalated to a trade ban as well as a black list of Libyian nationals prohibited from getting a European (Schengen) visa to enter Switzerland.
On Wednesday, Libya announced a total embargo on all economic and commercial exchange with Switzerland. A move which the Swiss downplayed, saying the importance of the volume of trade between the two countries was insignificant.
