The Srebrenica massacre marked a dark period in our modern history. 15 years ago to the day Europe’s worst massacre since World War II took place in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica where 8,000 Muslims were brutally killed by Serb forces in July, 1995.
The ceremony attracted huge crowds of mourning Muslims and world leaders which attended the mass funeral near the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica.
775 green-draped coffins of victims which have only recently been identified were set out and then laid to rest at the Potocari cemetary, outside the town of Srebrenica.
About 8,000 Muslims were killed in the massarcre. Around 50,000 people including European leaders and the Presidents of all former Yugoslav republics, were present at the ceremony.
“We recognise that there can be no lasting peace without justice,” US President Barack Obama said in a speech read out for him by U.S. Ambassador to B-H at the Potocari graveyard near the town of Srebrenica.
General Ratko Mladic, is wanted by the International Court in the Hague on charges of genocide, but remains to this day in hiding – many believe he is in Serbia to this day. Another of the alleged leaders behind the Srebrenica killings, political leader Radovan Karadzic, has been arrested in Belgrade and is standing trial for genocide.
