The Russian Navy is gearing up to launch the largest naval “exercise” in the World Ocean in the last years. The Northern Fleet flag carrier “Pyotr Veliky” (meaning Peter the Great in Russian) left the Fleet headquarters in Severomorsk on Tuesday according to RIA Novosti reports.
The warship will be accompanied by vessels from both the Northern Fleet, the Baltic Fleet as well as the Pacific Fleet. Ontop of the naval forces, aviation will also participate in the military drills, Navy sources told the news agency.
The warship “Peter Veliky” is expected to be at sea for at least two months and take part in drills both in the Mediterranean Sea as well as in the Indian Ocean. Xinhua reports suggest that the Navy was quoted as saying that the cruiser “would march in the fair sea zone for no less than six months”.
The warship will pass through the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, before it sails to the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal to hold joint exercises with vessels of the Black Sea Fleet.
Peter Veliky’s last naval exercise lasted around six months, starting in September 2008, during which the cruisers performed joint exercises with navy forces of countries including Venezuela and India.
