Finding it hard to cope with the financial crisis and the emotional turmoil during these difficult times? A new website sponsored by the U.S. government may help: “Getting Through Tough Economic Times”.
The “Getting Through Tough Economic Times” website offers a variety of tips, advice, resources as well as referalls to help people cope with the recession’s repercussions.
The website helps affected people identify and cope with serious health issues that are directly linked to financial worries.
“Economic turmoil (e.g., increased unemployment, foreclosures, loss of investments and other financial distress) can result in a whole host of negative health effects – both physical and mental. It can be particularly devastating to your emotional and mental well-being. Although each of us is affected differently by economic troubles, these problems can add tremendous stress, which in turn can substantially increase the risk for developing such problems as:”
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Compulsive Behaviors (over-eating, excessive gambling, spending, etc.)
- Substance Abuse
A special note to journalists links to suggestions from the Annenberg Public Policy Center about responsible and non-sensational coverage of suicides. Lurid media reports of suicides can lead to copycat suicides, the site warns.
SAMHSA, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, compiled the guide with help from several other government agencies and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center.
To read the guide, visit SAMHSA.
