In April, GlobalCrisisNews.com reported on the use of food stamps in the US. Over 34 million Americans received food stamps in May, according to government figures released earlier this month.

The surge is a sign of the deep economic crisis facing the US economy, taking its toll on unemployment and American’s wealth.

Enrollment surged by 2 percent to reach a record 34.4 million people, in May, the latest month for which figures are available.

The increase represents one in nine Americans marking the sixth straight month that enrollment set a new record.

  1. Don Birkholz says:

True, the most people on food stamps are on food stamps due to employment issues. But a survey done in Billings, MT showed 18 of 96 food stamp applicants listed mandatory auto insurance, fines, or DUI costs as a reason for needing food stamps. (That equals 70,000 over the last 20 years in Montana). The USDA has never done one survey to find out how many are on food stamps due to these reasons. Go to http://www.foodstampstudy.com Why don’t we change these laws and get these people off food stamps. What good is it to require an indigent to purchas 200$ of mandatory auto insurance and he goes on food stamps to get the 200$ back so he can buy food.
