Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday a 2.1 per cent drop in air traffic, measured in revenue passenger miles or RPMs, for the month of June. RPMs dropped to 6.7 billion over a 6.9 billion a year earlier.
Load factor, or the percentage of available seats filled with passengers, in June rose to 79.5% from 78.2% last year. Dallas-based Southwest (NYSE: LUV) airline has cut capacity in response to falling demand this year, like most airlines in the U.S.
As the company struggles to tackle the current economic climate, it announced a special fare sale, making all its routes available for $30, $60, or $90, depending on the length of the flight. Tickets are available until Wednesday night.
